Why the World Needs Summer Camp

With all the changes our world is going through, it’s important for youth development organizations such as summer camps to change with the times to continue serving young people and their families. The world needs the next generation to be more open to learning about each other’s views, beliefs, and cultures and summer camp is a special type of community where this can happen safely and easily. Summer camp is an opportunity for children to be exposed to the best of human character, where children practice being the best they can be and are encouraged by role models who have been carefully selected for just that purpose.

While there are many different types of camps and each one differs in terms of tradition and identity, they share the common goal of supporting and developing our youth. Summer camps add a spark of magic to a child’s summer: they are wholesome, inclusive environments purposefully designed to encourage self-expression and growth. At camp, campers always take that shot at a goal, comfortable in the knowledge that the people around them will cheer them on regardless of the result. Camp experiences stay with kids forever.

Sparked by the exciting adventures that childhood brings, Camp Friendship sets the benchmark for an exceptional summer experience with tried and true methods stemming from 50 years of experience. We are eager to be active partners in your child’s journey of wonder and self-discovery, and would be happy to tell you more about the benefits of camp in person, over the phone or via email. Our family-owned camp is available throughout the year for private camp tours – give us a call to set up an appointment and we’d be happy to show you around. See you this summer!

Choosing the Right Residential Camp

While this summer is relatively half-way over, the search for the perfect residential camp near Pennsylvania for sons and/or daughters is still not over for some families! The earlier that you start looking for a residential camp, the less stressful (and cheap) your experience will be. Here at Camp Friendship we have come up with a few tips to make the search a little bit easier, so keep on reading ahead! However, keep in mind that we still have some sessions open for your child to attend! Don’t take too long though, you might miss out on what could’ve been an amazing summer experience for them!

  1. What does the camp offer? The best way to guarantee that your son or daughter enjoys their experience is by sending them to a camp that offers what they are interested in. Look through the residential camp activities to see all of the options. At Camp Friendship, we offer sports, water activities, low and high ropes, creative arts, and different evening activities to end the day. There is something for everyone to do at Camp Friendship!
  2. How far away is the camp? The distance away from home shouldn’t affect your decision way too much. If you think a residential camp is the right fit, don’t cancel it out because it’s farther away than you wanted. Just make sure to visit the residential camp first before you make any final decisions.
  3. Who will be taking care of your children? One of the most important things to find out about is the residential camp staff. Ask about the hiring process, any licenses and training they take, and what the ratio of counselors to campers is. These are the people who will be with your children all summer, so feel free to ask as many questions as you want.
  4. What are on the campgrounds? Whether you’re taking an online tour or actually visiting the camp in person, find out about the residential camp facilities. Look at the cabins, all of the different fields and courts, the pool, the lake, etc. At Camp Friendship, we are constantly updating and checking the facilities to guarantee a safe and fun experience for our campers!

Now, are you ready to sign your son or daughter up for the best residential camp near Pennsylvania? Then contact Camp Friendship today at (434)-589-8950 for more information or to schedule a tour!

Spotlight: Emily Salvant & Friendship Bracelet Making!

Friendship Bracelets

IMG_1261

Besides Target Sports, Friendship Bracelet Making is one of the top activities here at Camp Friendship. Emily Salvant, Junior Girls counselor and instructor, has been making friendship bracelets almost 10 years now. I personally (today!) took her class and learned so much from the empress of friendship

bracelets.

Campers and counselors alike love to get involved with friendship bracelets and make them for one another. Campers also make their friends and are able to take home priceless gifts handcrafted by their friends, and continue to cherish the memories. During off time and cabin time, more campers and counselors than not are seen around camp with their materials. The campers like to sit with their counselors and discuss different patterns, styles, and colors they would like to use next! Boys and girls alike enjoy making and receiving friendship bracelets throughout the week, and often leave with arms covered in bracelets made by their closest friends.

Hopefully soon I’ll finish my first, and begin working on some for others! Friendship bracelet making here is a positive activity that everyone can enjoy, and random gifts from friends always make the campers’ day.

Upcoming Event: 80’s Rock Dance

This Thursday, June 23, Camp Friendship is hosting the weekly dance for our campers, this theme being 80’s ROCK! Counselors, staff, and campers have already begun looking for costumes, myself included!! Personally, I’m excited and cannot wait for what the campers have in store for us! I’m about to crimp my hair, find the hairband sunglasses and dance the night away along with the kids!

Just The Beginning at Summer Camp!

IMG_3483As Week 1 of Summer Camp begins, both our counselors and our campers are excited to get started! There is always chatter in the dining hall from happy children returning and seeing their friends. The newcomers are sometimes shy, but eager to make friends and get to know their new counselors.

I’ve been here 2.5 weeks so far, and every day is a new adventure for both campers and myself. Watching children grow and expand their skill-set has been a wonderful experience for the both of us. Becoming involved with camp is one of the best things I have chosen to do in my life, and one I definitely will not regret.

At Camp Friendship, every day has the possibility for children (and staff!) to make their own decisions and find what they love to do. Counselors and staff members get to know the children, and help them build confidence in themselves, as well as the opportunity to make many new friends.

Activity Highlight: Target Sports & Ashling Trainor!

Camp Friendship offers a variety of activities and the kids choose what classes they would like to take, the fan favorite this week being target sports. Target sports supervisor, Ashling Trainor, finds ways to keep children both happy and safe during archery programs here at camp. Children enjoy having the experience of shooting targets with bows and arrows. Children always leave the range happy with the experience, and often cannot wait to come back!

Ashling Trainor, the Targeting Sports Supervisor, has been involved with target sports and wilderness camping for many years. She began in Ireland, and has traveled all over Europe camping through mountains. Archery is by far her favorite subject to teach, and she specializes in teaching children/young adults. She also teaches children with disabilities archery as well, specializing in children with Autism. Ashling is a caring, loving individual with a passion in seeking challenges.IMG_0657

Ashling Trainor, seen assisting a child in archery

In archery, children are taught how to safely use a bow and arrow, and the program instructors get involved with the kids and show them how to have better accuracy and range. Everyone is involved together, and it stays a fun and safe experience for the campers. Kids shouting “I can’t wait to come back tomorrow!” whilst leaving the archery range is common, and gives campers an opportunity to bond with the other children in their class. Photographing campers’ smiling faces when they begin to understand and do well in activities (as well as the learning process) is one of the best parts of my job.

IMG_3815

As the first week of camp continues, children become happier, more self-confident, and more excited every day. Nothing is as delightful as watching a child experience something new, and see the pure smile across their face as they realize that they can do these things. Camp is a wonderful experience, and Camp Friendship makes it an exciting and interesting place to be for campers of all ages.
