Friendship Bracelets

Besides Target Sports, Friendship Bracelet Making is one of the top activities here at Camp Friendship. Emily Salvant, Junior Girls counselor and instructor, has been making friendship bracelets almost 10 years now. I personally (today!) took her class and learned so much from the empress of friendship

bracelets.

Campers and counselors alike love to get involved with friendship bracelets and make them for one another. Campers also make their friends and are able to take home priceless gifts handcrafted by their friends, and continue to cherish the memories. During off time and cabin time, more campers and counselors than not are seen around camp with their materials. The campers like to sit with their counselors and discuss different patterns, styles, and colors they would like to use next! Boys and girls alike enjoy making and receiving friendship bracelets throughout the week, and often leave with arms covered in bracelets made by their closest friends.

Hopefully soon I’ll finish my first, and begin working on some for others! Friendship bracelet making here is a positive activity that everyone can enjoy, and random gifts from friends always make the campers’ day.

Just The Beginning at Summer Camp!

IMG_3483As Week 1 of Summer Camp begins, both our counselors and our campers are excited to get started! There is always chatter in the dining hall from happy children returning and seeing their friends. The newcomers are sometimes shy, but eager to make friends and get to know their new counselors.

I’ve been here 2.5 weeks so far, and every day is a new adventure for both campers and myself. Watching children grow and expand their skill-set has been a wonderful experience for the both of us. Becoming involved with camp is one of the best things I have chosen to do in my life, and one I definitely will not regret.

At Camp Friendship, every day has the possibility for children (and staff!) to make their own decisions and find what they love to do. Counselors and staff members get to know the children, and help them build confidence in themselves, as well as the opportunity to make many new friends.

Activity Highlight: Target Sports & Ashling Trainor!

Camp Friendship offers a variety of activities and the kids choose what classes they would like to take, the fan favorite this week being target sports. Target sports supervisor, Ashling Trainor, finds ways to keep children both happy and safe during archery programs here at camp. Children enjoy having the experience of shooting targets with bows and arrows. Children always leave the range happy with the experience, and often cannot wait to come back!

Ashling Trainor, the Targeting Sports Supervisor, has been involved with target sports and wilderness camping for many years. She began in Ireland, and has traveled all over Europe camping through mountains. Archery is by far her favorite subject to teach, and she specializes in teaching children/young adults. She also teaches children with disabilities archery as well, specializing in children with Autism. Ashling is a caring, loving individual with a passion in seeking challenges.IMG_0657

In archery, children are taught how to safely use a bow and arrow, and the program instructors get involved with the kids and show them how to have better accuracy and range. Everyone is involved together, and it stays a fun and safe experience for the campers. Kids shouting “I can’t wait to come back tomorrow!” whilst leaving the archery range is common, and gives campers an opportunity to bond with the other children in their class. Photographing campers’ smiling faces when they begin to understand and do well in activities (as well as the learning process) is one of the best parts of my job.

As the first week of camp continues, children become happier, more self-confident, and more excited every day. Nothing is as delightful as watching a child experience something new, and see the pure smile across their face as they realize that they can do these things. Camp is a wonderful experience, and Camp Friendship makes it an exciting and interesting place to be for campers of all ages.

Tips for First Time Co-Ed Summer Camp Parents near North Carolina

Teamwork, Positivity, Encouragement for Campers

We are less than a month away until our co-ed summer camp near North Carolina gets underway! With the school year coming to an end, your house must be booming with excitement for a summer of fun at summer camp!! Of course it’s perfectly normal for first time campers (and parents) to experience some anxiety as departure for camp gets closer and closer.

It’s just as normal for a parent to worry about missing their child as it is for a child to worry about missing home. This may be the first time your child will not be home at night and there in the morning when you wake up. But, this is what the sleep away camp experience is all about! It’s a learning and growing experience for children and their parents!

Your children will be in a controlled, worry-free, and safe environment. Just because you aren’t there to watch them, doesn’t mean they will be alone! The great camp staff will be there to make sure your children have the best summer of their lives!

And, this of course is why you decided to send your children to summer camp in the first place! You recognize the value and benefits camp has on children. Camp is a place to grow, learn to be independent, and build long lasting friendships with a new group of children.

Of course, this doesn’t make it any easier on you as a first time camp parent! Here are some tips and ideas to remember as this year’s camp season approaches:

  • As parents, we run into situations where we tell our kids that it’s okay to be nervous. Remind yourself of this very fact! Assure your nervous kids that camp will be a blast, and remember to practice what you preach!
  • Embrace this time away from your children. Focus on a hobby, activity, or project that you’ve been “meaning to get around to”. Maybe there is a class you’ve always wanted to take?
  • Your children will someday go away to college, and this is a perfect opportunity to experience what life will be like!
  • Just think of the joy you will experience when you see that smiling face on your camper when you go pick them up at the end of their time at camp!

Most importantly remember that you don’t have to worry! Your camper is safe and thriving at summer camp. They are learning to make decisions, learning new skills, and gaining confidence in themselves and their abilities!

If you are still concerned, check out our Parent Resources. And remember, camp is only a phone call away, and Visiting Day is just around the corner!

3 Things to Love About Camp Friendship

Some of our Junior Girls Campers have been enjoying Arts and Crafts activities.

Can you believe that it’s less then a month until the first day at Camp Friendship? It feels like just yesterday that our campers were running around having an awesome time LAST summer. Here at our residential camp near Maryland, we are already counting down the days until we are reunited with our campers to have an even better summer (if that’s even possible)! And to finish off the summer, we thought we would give potential campers, and even returning campers, three things to love about Camp Friendship!

  1. What’s camp without all of the fun activities? At Camp Friendship, we offer campers a variety of residential camp activities to choose from. There’s something for everyone to enjoy! The activities include arts & crafts, aquatics, performing arts, sports, and more. No matter what you’re interested in, Camp Friendship has something for you.
  2. We don’t mean to brag, but our residential camp staff is the best. Our counselors are a group of enthusiastic, motivated, hardworking, and responsible individuals who love to work with children and help them to reach their maximum potential. In addition, all of our staff goes through a thorough hiring process that includes a background check, interview, training, and more to ensure that they are fit and ready to give campers a safe and fun experience at Camp Friendship.
  3. Finally, campers will leave at the end of the summer with a ton of memories and friends that will last a lifetime. One of the best parts about going away to residential camp is all of the friendships and bonds that campers create between one another. Many of our campers say that they have met their best friend at camp, and count down the days until they are reunited again next summer!

Now, if those three reasons weren’t enough to fall in love with the best residential camp near Maryland, then contact us to learn more! Call Camp Friendship at (434)-589-8950 for more information or to schedule a tour of our campgrounds today!
